Foster Information

Thank you for your interest in being a foster home with We Love Chinese Cresteds Animal Rescue (WLCCAR).
At WLCCAR we are committed to finding the best and most devoted foster homes that we possibly can and we hope that you are one. The first requirement is that you read and understand some of our more important requirements below, prior to applying.
FOSTER HOME APPLICATION EXPECTATIONS
*Be at least 21 years of age.
*Love and understand the Chinese Crested breed.
*Will provide unconditional love, acceptance, guidance and dedication to their foster dog.
*An understanding that rescue dogs may have been previously abused and neglected and may behave in ways that are generally unacceptable but is something that our organization accepts and strives to change. A few such issues are growling, fear biting, barking, howling, chewing/destroyed property, marking, potty training and anxiety.
*An understanding that there is no way to gauge how long a particular foster dog will be with you in your home. They may go after their first 2 week mandatory assessment period or it may be up to a year or more, it all depends on the dog and their issues.
*An understanding that often times there isn't a choice of what dog is placed in a foster home. Male/female, powderpuff/hairless.
*An understanding that a rescued dog may come to you with kennel cough, parvo, distemper, worms, or other parasite. This is why we encourage your pets be up to date on vaccinations and ask that you take this into account, especially if you are unable to vaccinate your pet(s) due to medical issues. Note: Always quarantine new foster dogs.
*Willing to seek outside training and guidance for your foster dog.
*An understanding that WLCCAR pays for the foster dogs medical care but you will provide the dog with a loving home, food, treats, grooming & clothing. Your foster dog should be a full fledged member of your family until they find their forever home.

*Will respond promptly to emails, phone calls and keep lines of communication open at all times.
*Are able to interact respectfully with potential adopters, other foster homes, rescue members & outside rescues.

*An understanding that you will need to provide a monthly update on your foster dog to including photos.

APPLICATION
Some of the requested information on our application may seem "invasive," however, it is all absolutely necessary. Many dogs in rescue have been abused, neglected or have medical conditions.
We want to ensure that all of our foster dogs go to homes that are suitable for their needs. Weeks prior to putting them up for adoption, each dog is evaluated for behavioral, physical and psychological issues. The evaluation allows us to understand the needs of each dog and helps in determining what type of home they would be best suited in.
VETERINARY REFERENCES
We require veterinary references to ensure that any current pets:
*Have been altered - unless otherwise recommended by your veterinarian
*Are on monthly heartworm preventative
*Receive other preventative care as recommended by your veterinarian
*Your veterinarians overall impression of you and your pets
WLCCAR recommends that you have your pets titre tested or on an annual vaccination schedule (similar to the one provided by the American Animal Hospital Association) and that you provide annual health screenings to ensure the health of your pets. However, each adoption application is reviewed on a case by case basis and individual circumstances will be considered when WLCCAR is evaluating the application.
PERSONAL REFERENCES
We require personal references to get a sense of who you are and your ability to appropriately provide for the welfare of a rescued dog. We want to ensure that all of our foster dogs go to homes that are suitable for their physical and psychological needs. Personal references can go a long way to ensure that this occurs.

HOME VISIT
This is exactly what it sounds like: We want to visit your home to ensure that all of our requirements are met.
We will want to see interior (including bedrooms, basements and, if applicable, all floors) and exterior of your home (including outbuildings and garages). Since we have the ability to send and receive video, Skype and Facetime, via our smartphones and computers, etc., we have chosen to allow pre-recorded videos, Skype Session and FaceTime home visits. Communication must be clear and of good quality otherwise we will not accept them. Read below for what we want to see during the Home Visit.
The Family:
Introduce yourself, your family, roommates, significant others and current pets, if any, and be as candid as possible. Explain things to us as you go through your home; who, what, when, where, why?
Interior:
We want to see where the dog will be living, sleeping and eating. This includes where you will store the dog’s food, where the/she will eat, sleep and be active inside. This should also include any additional areas that the dog will have access to like sewing or craft rooms, the garage, basement, and/or kennel areas.
Exterior:
We want to see where the dog will be going potty and enjoying the sights and sounds of the outdoors, ie: backyard, walk route, etc. If you have a fence we will want to see the gate and latches as well as the perimeter to ensure that there are no gaps that a dog can get through. Exterior should also include any areas that the dog may visit while outside: lakes, ponds, dog houses, covered areas, out buildings, etc.
We also want to see:
The front of your home including the address on your home or mailbox or curb
The view from the front of your home looking out to the front yard
The view of the back of your home
The view from the back of your home looking out into the backyard
These views, allow us to see what type of environment and area you live in. For instance, a dog that is a flight risk may not be best suited for a high traffic or densely wooded areas, etc.
APPROVAL
Once we have reviewed your application we will request to set up a time for Skype, Facetime or a pre-recorded video Home Visit. Once this is completed or received, we will email you and let you know what the final decision and a foster agreement form if applicable. This is the time that we will answer additional questions from you regarding the fostering process.
FOSTER AGREEMENT
Please ensure that you fully read and understand all agreements that you complete with us before you sign them. A few key legal obligations to note are: you agree that any dogs that you foster for WLCCAR belong to WLCCAR; you are required to return the foster dog to WLCCAR if, at any point, you are no longer willing or able to care for said dog or we deem that you are unsuitable to continue to provide for them; You are required to relinquish the foster dog to the adopter that we approve. You will also be required to agree not to surrender, give or sell said foster dog to another rescue, individual or shelter; and you agree to provide monthly updates and photos for the foster dogs bio on our website and pet finder.
Additional questions or suggestions can be emailed via our Contact Us form.
